Investigation of layered clusters and cluster-assembled materials

Objective

Research objectives and content Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
This project concerns the fabrication of layered clusters in the molecular beam and their mass-spectrometric investigation. In particular, fullerene molecules coated with layers of different materials will be realized and characterized by mass-spectroscopic analysis. New experimental methods will be devised to fabricate heterogeneous layered aggregates and to produce continuous neutral cluster beams composed predominantly of the most stable species. Deposition of the cluster beam on adequate substrates will result in nanostructured films. Information on the structural, electronic and magnetic properties of these latter will be provided by investigations performed in collaboration with several groups of the Max-Planck Institut (MPI). The scientific and technical expertise of the host group as well as the interdisciplinary research facilities provided by the host institution are a prerequisite for the accomplishment of this projet and will give me the unique opportunity to acquire new skills and knowledge not only in the field of mass-spectrometry, but also in various fields involved in the characterization of the novel cluster-based materials.
