Sensor positioning and orientation for airborne remote sensing applications using gps, ins, and image processing techniques


Research objectives and content The objective of the project is to define an optimal selection of techniques for the orientation of airborne remote sensors, in particular the INS/GPS orientation procedure will be compared with the combination of digital aerial triangulation and GPS. The research will be done in the context of the development of highly automated, high quality, cost-effective systems for collecting geo-information. The techniques involved, are: 1. Precise positioning with GPS (Global Positioning System) using integer ambiguity resolution 2. Precise attitude determination using INS (Inertial Navigation System) 3. Automated digital point transfer in digital images 4. Aerial triangulation The project is focused on improving the methods of positioning and attitude determination using GPS, INS, or integrated INS/GPS. In particular, besides the aforementioned definition of an optimal orientation technique, improvement of GPS integer ambiguity resolution over long (more than 50 km) distances in a kinematic environment, eventually assisted by a low cost INS, and the integration of INS/GPS for precise and reliable attitude determination will be topics of research. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) Training will be given on INS, digital automatic aerial triangulation methods, and digital remote sensing technology. The applicant will thereby acquire up-to-date knowledge of these techniques, which will be complementary to his current knowledge of modem geodetic positioning techniques.
