Objectif My main aim is to make new compounds and materials in a topically important area of chemistry - metallasiloxanes and molecular surface mimics. I shall investigate the synthesis and use of both new silanols, and bulky silanols already prepared by Dr Lickiss' group, to make large metallasiloxane molecular frameworks, and smaller metallasiloxanes that are similar to surface active species on silica. There will, therefore, be two closely related strands to the work which will require two years work The new species prepared will be fully characterised and their potential as catalysts investigated. This will allow comparisons to be made with bulk surface species and more efficient syntheses of more reactive and structurally useful materials. (2) Training: I wish to broaden my research experience by working in a new and potentially useful field, and to learn new techniques and methods in a major department abroad.
