Cosmology of dynamically evolved structures, from protogalaxies to galaxy clusters - theory developments, comparisons to simulations and observations

Objectif

Research objectives and content
Much effort is being devoted to understanding the problem of gravitational dynamics. Computer simulations provide solutions, but are much time-expensive. Analytical arguments, tested against simulations, can provide fast and cheap predictions on dynamically evolved structures, to be compared to cosmological observations which are being performed. The objectives of this research are: to develop an analytical framework, based on realistic approximations to gravitational dynamics, such to readily provide predictions on large cosmological collapsed structures, such as protogalaxies or galaxy groups and clusters. To test this analytical framework against numerical simulations. To compare the predictions of various cosmological models to new observations. The analytical framework will be mainly based on a Lagrangian fluidodynamical formulation. It will provide predictions on the mass distribution, merging histories, angular momentum, real-space and redshift-space positions of collapsed structures, their influence on the CMBR.
After testing against computer simulations, these predictions will be compared to observational data on protogalaxies and galaxy systems. This will provide valuable constraints on cosmological parameters. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
The applicant expects to further specialize and widen his knowledge in cosmology, from theory to simulations and observations, produce valuable research, and take benefit from an exceptionally stimulating environment. Links with industry / industrial relevance (22)
