Objective
An experiment to study quantum statistical properties of an ultra cold rubidium gas confine in a magnetic trap of the Ioffe type is proposed. A continuous beam of atoms produced by novel source is first loaded into a magneto-optical trap. The cold and dense sample of atoms will be further cooled by dark state polarization gradient cooling, before being transfered into the magnetic trap. Bose condensation of the rubidium atoms will be achieved by force, evaporative cooling. Investigation of quantum statistical properties including many-partica] interactions, dynamics of the phase transition and multiple light scattering are planned. The experiment combines knowledge on trapped ultracold spinpolarized hydrogen in the host group of Prof. J.T.M. Walraven with my experience on trapping and cooling of rubidium by light forces. I will greatly benefit from the exceptional background on quantur gases in general as provided by this group.

Grating stabilized diode lasers are being designed and constructed according to our specifications by TUI - Laser GmbH in Germany. Development of high power, single mod diode lasers will be pursued.
