Investigations of fast ion-atom collisions in a storage ring, applying an ultra-cold supersonic gas-jet target

Objective

Research objectives and content
The main objective of the present proposal is the investigation of fast ion-atom collision experiments applying the internal ultracold gas-jet target at the heavy-ion storage ring 'CRYRING'. The technique to be used for extracting the detailed kinematics of the collision processes will be the novel technique recoil momentum spectroscopy (RIMS). By installing a gas-jet target and RIMS-spectrometer at the 'CRYRING' we obtain a unique combination of high ion beam quality and current and the cold highdensity target. This will allow us to extend the detailed studies of higher-order collision processes to higher energies, where the reaction cross sections are smaller.
Besides the main project I will be involved in lifetime measurements of the 1s2s 3s metastable state of He-like ions and investigation of multi-electron transfer processes slow collisions between highly charged ions and C60.
Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
From a basic science point of view I will gather experience in the field of ion-atom collisions, which is related to the electron ion collisions that I have investigated so far. Another aspect is of a technical nature: After working with electron coolers and an ebis storage-ring injector, the gas-jet target represents another storage-ring device for me to get acquainted with.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
