Objective
Research objectives and content
The project is concerned with the description ---based on density functional theory--- of polyelectrolytes. We propose to focus on the poorly understood but important effects of co- and counterion correlations near the (highly charged) surface of the mesoscopic (colloidal or polymeric) polyions. We plan to apply concepts and ideas from systems like electrolytes, molten salts near solid surfaces, and confined fluids, and hence to bring together the theoretical description of several subareas in liquid- state physics. In addition, once the correlation effects have been described realistically, they can be incorporated effectively in a phenomenological theory, from which reliable explicit predictions of the structure and phase behaviour of polyelectrolytes can be made. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
The applicant has a background in the theory of bulk liquid crystals and magnetic colloids. This project gives him the opportunity to leam about the effects of (i) high charges on the particles and (ii) surfaces and interfaces. These effects are not only scientifically fascinating but also relevant in many applications. The combination of his current background with the proposed project will give the applicant an excellent overview of the broad field of complex fluids.

Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.
