The study of transient molecules in hot dense plasmas

Objectif

Research objectives and content
The aim of the proposed research project is to develop the model (erected by the candidate during his Phd Thesis) of transient molecule behaviour in hot dense plasmas from its present position of dealing with one bound electron to being able to describe the general case of many bound electrons. To do this, the present semi-analytical description of the bound electronic structure will be replaced by numerical calculations which are needed to include the effect of the bound interaction. Following this, it is intended to use the model to calculate line profiles and to do this, two other effects need to be included. The first is a description of the other broadening processes (Doppler, Natural and electron collisional). The second is the average over internuclear separations of the transient molecule. This will be accomplished using pair distribution functions from Molecular Dynamics simulations It is the final purpose of this project to give an accurate assessment of the alteration of line profiles due to transient molecular behaviour for a large range of plasma conditions. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
The candidate will be hosted in a group which is leading in the field of laser-created plasmas, both at the fundamental and theoretical levels. He will carry his theoretical and computational work at the Rutherford Appleton Lob oratory which is already a National Facility and a European HCM Large Scale Facility, and for this reason is used to host and form young researchers.
inks with industry / industrial relevance (22)
There is at the present time no direct link with industry. On a longer term, achievement of Inertial Confinement Fusion will give rise to strong industrial involvements, and the sucess of ICF will need a good understanding and good diagnosis of hot dense plasmas.
