Large deviation estimates for atm traffic policed with the generic cell rate algorithm

Research objectives and content
The project aims at developing a method for calculation of overflow probabilities for the queue used to multiplex a large number of ATM connections described with the standardised parameters peak cell rate, sustain cell rate and burst tolerance. To this purpose, Large Defiation Theory will be applied. The technical problems that arise because of the partly deterministic nature of the sources wili be solved.
Sources compliant with the traffic contract can be modelled as stochasiic sources followed by a queue delaying the non-confornung cells. A large number of such sources are multiplexed using a queue served at fixed rate. Large Deviation Theory is used to calculate the probabiiity of large queue lengths. In the final stage of the project, more general sources will be considered.
Training content (objective. benefit and expected impact)
The objective is to build up further expertise in the application of Large Deviation Theory to problems of telecommunications. In this way, a powerful technique for estimating buffer lengths in ATM equipment will become available by the project. To this end, tools used in design can incorporate the obtained results.
Links with industry / industrial relevance (22)
The applied probability group at DIAS (where the project is to be carried out) is involved in the EU funded study "Measure" together with the Cambridge University computer laboratory and the Swedish telecom company Telia. The telecommunications group in Antwerp co-operates with Alcatel-Bell. Results of the project will be discussed with these partners.
