Introducing chirality in catalytic c-c bond forming reactions of non-activated hydrocarbons

Objective

Research objectives and content
C-C-Bond forming reactions of non activated hydrocarbons are widely applied in organic and polymer chemistry, but rarely in asymmetric synthesis. This is due to the fact that suitable chiral catalysts of high efficiency and selectivity and of general applicability are not available. In this project, new camphor-derived chiral ligands containing phosphorus as coordinating element will be prepared and their complexes with transition metals will be studied as catalysts in hydrovinylation and dicarboration reactions. A detailed theoretical analysis of the results concerning reactivity and enantioselectivity with respect to structural details like bonding and bite angles, energetics etc. will give a solid basis for the tailoring of new ligands with even better properties. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
Chiral analytical techniques such as gas chromatography with chiral columns will be introduced during the project. We have a long experience and excellent know-how in chiral analytic in Munich. This will make the host group in Lisbon more independent with respect to analytic abilities and allow for faster progress in their efforts to widen the scope of their research in the direction of chiral synthesis.
Links with industry / industrial relevance (22)
Results are of general interest for pharmaceutical industry when new drugs must be introduced in chiral form. Specific companies to be contacted are Boehringer and Schering.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
