Electrical and optical characterization of artificial atoms using space-charge spectroscopy

Objetivo

Research objectives and content
The research in semiconductor physics is at present to a large extent focused on quantum dots (QDs). QDs are nanometer-sized Q structures with electronic confinement in all three dimernsions. QDs are very interesting both from the point of view of fundamental physics, and for technological applications due to the unique possibility to tailor the electronic structure and, accordingly, the electrical and optical properties. In the proposed project we intend to investigate the electrical and optical properties of QDs realized in technologically important material systems e.g. Si/SiGe and InAs/GaAs by space-charge spectroscopy. From these studies we expect to obtain detailed information on the electronic structure, band-offsets, electron- electron-interactions and electron-phonon coupling. Also the role of doping on the properties of the QDs will be investigated. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
The field of spectroscopy on QDs is new to me. In order to get the necessary experience to build up a research area in Lund on this fascinating topic it is of greatest importance to me to have the opportunity to spend a longer time at a research laboratory in the frontier. Since, the semiconductor group headed by Prof. Kotthaus at LMU of Munich is world-leading in the field of space- charge spectroscopy on QDs, I can not think of any better host institution to acquire the proposed training.
Links with industry / industrial relevance (22) The proposed project is linked with an industrial project concerning SET devices (Siemens, Dr Rischat)
