Objective
Research objectives and contents
The main purpose of my research work is the synthesis and the characterization of poly-p-pllenyletle derivatives and of cellulose derivatives, bearing ionic side groups, like sulfonic, carboxylic or phosplloric acids . These hairy rod type polyelectrolytes, show interesting association phenomena like the formation ol cylindrical micelles They give rise to Iyotropic liquid crystals at very small concentrations in aqueous media.
Interesting points are what controls their aggregation to Ic-phases? Do they form monolayers and multilayers by the Longmuir-Blodgett technique as well as hairy rod polymers without ionic side groups? I will concentrate my research work on the following points - correlation between molecular weight and phase behaviour, - influence of charge density on the formation of the Iyotropic phase (the type of Iyotropic phase has to be investigated);
- study of the phase diagram and its dependence on salt
concentration - crosslinking reactions to stabilize chemically the supermolecules, which form spontaneously by aggregation.
Training content (objectives, benefit and expected impact)
This period of training will allow me to increase my expertise in the field of LC polymelrs, to learn the use of methods such as electron microscopy, surface force microscopy, Langmuir-Blodgett technique and to apply other methods in the synthesis, like tile Suzuki-coupling method.
