Objective
Research objectives and content
The proposed project will investigate the application of optical Wavelength Divi soon Multiplexing (WDM) in intersatellite links, along with optical Wavelength Routing in the emerging Global Satellite
Telecommunications Networks (GSTNs). WDM is a powerful tool for increasing link and aggregate network capacity by several orders of magnitude compared with current RF inks employed by GSTNs such as Iridium or Teledesic. The project will also investigate the feasibility of performing part of the processing functions optically on board the satellites, and will identify the steps to be taken in terms of components developments in order to implement an on board optical switchboard. The proposed training'will mainly involve: - Theoretical modelling and analysis - Simulation of the network and the various subsystems using the Optical Space Communications Simulation Code developed by ESTEC. Studies will include: - Networking issues - The WDM intersatellite link - The optical terminal - The optical processing unit on board the satellite
Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
The tusk of the requested training is to gain experience in cutting edge space born telecommunications systems such as GSTNs. The proposed project has the unique chara cteristic of combining different telecom systems and techniques and therefore will reinforce my background as a telecom engineer. Additionally, ESTEC which has pioneered worldwide in the area of optical space communications will provide the most stimulating environment to execute the proposed project. It will also be a first class opportunity to come in contact with other aspects of space science and engineering. At the end of the two years training at ESTEC I plan to return to Greece and join a research group working in emerging telecommunications systems and services.
Links with industry / industrial relevance (22)
The proposed project will work closely with: -The industrial contributors to the SILEX project, especially Matra Marconi Space which is the primar contractor -With Oerlikon Contraves which is currently working with ESTEC on the development of a demonstrator of a compact optical terminal for use in LEO-LEO GSTNs like the ones examined by the proposed project. - Lamda Inc. will be involved in design and simulation aspects of the optical terminal.
