Children, citizenship and internal migration in the European Union

Objectif

Research objectives and content
This proposal is designed to enable me to spend time developing the Portuguese dimension of a large. inter-disciplinary, comparative research project on children and migration in the EU (involving Greece, Sweden. the UK and Portugal, funded by the European Commission and The Nuffield Foundation and co-ordinated by the applicant). The wider project builds upon the findings of a previous EC funded project on gender and internal migration (Ackers, 1995), which provided important information about the structure of EU migrant households. This proposal focuses on children growing up in these households, in the EU. It seeks to examine children's involvement in the migration decision and their understandings of the impact of migration on family relationships and roles: their legal status as recipients of educational and other social services; their identity and sense of belonging and their life chances. The research will also consider the impact of family breakdown on this group of children. particularly where their parents have a different national origin. The project involves detailed study of EC law and its implementation in four Member States together with the collection and analysis of both quantitative and qualitative data.
Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
The specific training element. for the host institution, includes the development of expertise in the methodology of comparative research. and in particular in the use of computer-assisted analysis of qualitative data (using Nud.Ist). In .
addition. training in European Community law particularly the social dimension . will be provided both by myself. as applicant. and also by close liaison with Jo Shaw (Jean Monnet Professor in European Law and Director of the Centre for the Study of Law in Europe). The time will also be spent developing new research proposals for future collaborative initiatives .
and in the development of research methodologies in comparative socio-legal study involving children and young persons. . For myself the period would provide important insights into undertaking research in another European country. and outside . the formal University sector. in an organisation which undertakes a variety of EC-funded projects, as well as new .
Opportunities for future collaboration and dissemination of research findings Links with industry / industrial relevance (22)

The former organisations are represented on the steering group.
