Chemical gas sensors based on porphyrin, phthalocyanine and porphyrazine thin films


I propose to study gas sensors based on the specific interactions of thin films of porphyrins, phthalocyanines and porphyrazines with two families of atmospheric pollutants, NOx and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, using a multidisciplinary approach.
My goal is to establish a correlation between two important properties, the sensitivity and selectivity. To this end, I will study the nature of interactions between the gases and the host matrices, using optical probing methods (absorption and fluorescence) and will try to enhance the sensitivity and selectivity via new strategies.
The project will be carried out in the group of Dr T.H. Tran-Thi (Saclay), who is an expert in the chemistry and photochemistry of porphyrins derivatives. For the targeted projects, I will strongly interact with the group of Dr S. Palacin, who will study the in-plane conductivity of the organic systems of common interest, in the presence of various gases. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
The project will train me in important new techniques (laser spectroscopies and time-resolved probing methods, tailoring of thin films). The combination of the basic and targeted aspects on chemical sensors, with its potential implications in environmental problems, is very attractive to me. I will also benefit from the close contact with Dr Palacin's group with the parallel ongoing conductivity measurement on thin films, that I will study with another complementary approach. It is research area on which I plan to focus in the future.

Gas sensors, in particular PAHs sensors is a wide open field of research, which interests industries. In the center of Saclay, the Radiation chemistry group has an ongoing collaboration with the Departement d'Electronique et d'Instrumentation Nucleaire (DEIN) of dle Direction des Techniques Avancees (DTA), who is interested in novel systems for gas sensors.
