Influence of the air-sea-ice interactions in the polar regions on the global climate - a study with a new coupled atmosphere-ocean general circulation model

Objetivo

Research objectives and content
The objective of the present research project is twofold: (1) to develop a coupled atmosphere-ocean general circulation model of the new generation and (2) to use this model in order to quantify the role played by the air-sea-ice interactions at high latitudes in controlling the Earth's climate. The model will include the new atmospheric general circulation model of the Laboratoire de Meteorologie Dynamique (Paris) and a higher-resolution version of the global ocean/sea-ice model recently developed at the Institut d'Astronomie et de Geophysique G. Lemaitre of the Universite catholique de Louvain (Louvain-la-Neuve). It will be investigated to what degree the exchanges of heat, mass, and momentum between ocean and sea ice affect the climate simulated by the model. The importance of specific sea-ice processes will also be examined. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
This project will improve our understanding of the physical mechanisms that act within the coupled atmosphere/ocean/sea ice system. It will also allow me to familiarize myself with three-dimensional climate models. with supercomputers. and with techniques of treatment of model outputs. My training in climatolog will therefore be significantly improved at the end of the project.
