High energy phenomena near neutron stars and black holes

Objective

Research objectives and content
This project seeks to investigate in detail the physics of accretion, particle acceleration and jet-like ejections in the environment of neutron stars and stellar-mass black holes within our Galaxy. Accretion is traced by X-ray timing experiments; particle acceleration and ejection by radio timingtypes of experiments have been performed with little or no interdisciplinary cooperation. However, in an exciting new development, recent work by myself and collaborators have demonstrated the great benefit and insights to be gained by combining results from different energy regimes: we have for the first time been able to directly observe the periodic ejection and refill of the inner accretion disc around a black hole, by combination of radio, infrared and X-ray timing experiments We seek to combine my expertise in the realm of radio astronomy with that of the Host institution in X-ray timing in order to bring together two previously disparate strands of research and exploit the potential for discovery hinted at by our recent work. In doing so, we shall open up a new and exciting field in the study of physics and bulk flows around relativistic objects.
Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) In working at U Amsterdam, I would benefit specifically in expanding my expertise into the area of X-ray astronomy and improving my abilities at modelling multi-component systems. More generally, there would be many benefits gleaned from the general environment of excellence at such at cutting edge institution.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
