Magnetic materials for tyre sensors

Objective

Research objectives and content
The main objective of the research is to investigate soft and hard magnetic materials, and the processing of these materials, that may be used for sensors in tyres. In particular, the three main areas that would be investigated are:
(i) the development of soft magnetic materials with high
permeability to be used as materials in antennae for the remote transmission of power and data to active sensors (ii) passive sensors based on hard magnetic alloys with variable Curie Temperatures (iii) position sensors to determine tyre wall deformation The project would involve the fabrication of the soft and hard magnetic alloys from their elements, processing and characterisation, in order to determine the optimum alloys and processing conditions, and testing of the devices within the applications.
Training content (objective. benefit and expected impact)
The objective of the training would be to involve the use of techniques that are new to the applicant, as well as to develop further knowledge on techniques that are already familiar to the applicant. There is also the benefit of working within a group with considerable expertise and knowledge in the area of research and development of hard and soft magnetic materials. In addition, there is the oportunity to work with industry in another European country, and to build upon the experience that the applicant has already. This would benefit the applicant both in terms of scientific/technical experience, and in terms of working in an oversees environment, making the applicant more marketable within Europe. Links with industry / industrial relevance (22)
The proposal has relevance to the tyre/transport industry and is linked to Pirelli (Milan) who have an interest in research and development of advanced magnetic materials for tyre sensors.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
