Formation and evolution of millisecond pulsars

Objective

Research objectives and content
Neutron stars allow for fundamental studies in all disciplines of physics in the most extreme regimes - conditions which are impossible to imitate in any laboratory on Earth. The high incidence of binaries (double stars) among millisecond pulsars in combination with rapid spin and relatively weak magnetic fields, strongly suggest a large fraction of them (possibly all) are old neutron stars that have been 'recycled' by accretion of mass and angular momentum from a companion star in a binary system. The objective of my research is to obtain a better understanding of the physics behind the interactions in a compact binary system as well as the dynamics of rotating magnetized neutron stars. The subjects to be investigated include the effects of mass transfer, loss of mass and orbital angular momentum, asymmetric supernova explosions and evaporation of the companion star.
Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
As a postdoc. at CHEAF in Amsterdam, I expect to gain a deeper insight regarding the nature of binary neutron stars from collaboration and discussions with dr. E. P. J. van den Heuvel and co-workers. My work will be theoretical, but it will benefit from the X-ray data obtained from other astrophysicists at CHEAF.Links with industry / industrial relevance (22)

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
