An improved short baseline neutrino oscillation experiment with a hybrid emulsion-silicon tracking detector

Objetivo

Research objectives and content The main goal of this project is to develop a new type of hybrid detector consisting of an emulsion target with a microstrip silicon tracker as a future short baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. This novel detector would be used to search for the appearance of the tau neutrino (vt) in a predominantly muon neutrino (v5) beam at CERN by utilising the vertex position of the vt interaction in the emulsion, as determined by silicon microstrip detectors, and then search for the distinct signature of the decay of the tau (T-) lepton. If neutrino oscillations are found it would provide evidence that neutrinos have mass, with consequences for cosmology (hot dark matter) and astrophysics (solar neutrino problem). Even if oscillations are not found, it will improve on the neutrino mixing angle sensitivity by more than an order of magnitude with respect to the current vp- vt oscillation experiments, NOMAD and CHORUS, being carried out at CERN, down to a mass squared difference between the v5 and the VT of 0.1 eV2. The objective of the present proposal is to have a working design and prototype for this novel type of hybrid detector and to experimentally test the assumptions that have been utilised to determine the expected sensitivity of this neutrino oscillation search. The experimental resolution of the system and the study of possible backgrounds to the vt signal will be determined by operating the prototype in charged particle test beams and at the CERN wide-band neutrino beam. The content of this proposal is to perform the design, construction and installation of the silicon tracking section of any prototypes that might be tested during the duration of the fellowship. In addition, I will participate in the data analysis of the current neutrino oscillation data from NOMAD and from any silicon-emulsion prototypes that are built.
Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) The training content of the project is to improve my technical expertise in the area of silicon detectors, an increasingly important tool in High Energy Physics. Most high energy physics experiments of the future will have large area silicon detectors (in particular, the Large Hadron Collider experiments at CERN), so improving my expertise in this area will be of utmost importance in my future career. Links with industry / industrial relevance (22) There will invariably be links with the silicon manufacturing industry in order to optimise the design of the detectors as well as with companies that specialise in electronics components and test equipment for the manufacture of the silicon modules.
