Industrial transfer of hard chrome replacement technology

Objectif

Research objectives and content
The objective of this project is to transfer newly developing technology for the production of replacements for hard chrome plated wear resistant surface treatments. These treatments based on PVD deposited multilayer nitride coatings are currently under development in a BRITE/EuRam project BE96-3305, 9.10.96: 'Environmentally friendly and hardness enhanced PVD CrN/TaN superlattice coatings as novel alternative to plated hard chrome.' (NEWCHROME). The aim of the project is to replace hard chrome plating with its highly toxic effluent byproducts with a PVD coating process which will perform as well but will cause minimal environmental damage. The industrial partner, Surfcoat Oy, is a an SME which is a partner in the above BRITE/EuRam project with the role of adapting the NEWCHROME coatings to their existing PVD coating facility which is aimed at large scale and multipart coating processes. The applicant is proposing to spend one year with Surfcoat Oy to oversee the adaptation of this process to the company's production process and to further develop the expertise of the company in the hard coatings/multilayer/ process control area.
The applicant has been carrying out research in plasma deposition processes for approximately 20 years and is actively working on the development of PVD processes for deposition of hard coatings and for new deposition sources. It is intended that the applicant's knowledge and experience will enable the company to efficiently transfer the new processes to full production.
Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
Currently, Surfcoat Oy is a manufacturer of coated parts in two areas (i) web coating of polymer films for packaging materials and (ii) wear resistant and decorative coating of multiple parts. It is not at present providing an alternative to hard chrome plating in the market. If it can fully exploit the advances in coating performance of the NEWCHROME process then it can extend its existing product base to cover this market with a consequent increase in local employment, without causing environmental damage. The aim of the TMR action proposed here is to transfer the knowledge and expertise of the applicant to the company to enable this process improvement to be carried out in an efficient manner and to minimise the time taken to bring the new technology into production. Links with industry / industrial relevance (22)
The proposed host institution is a company whose main business is surface coating. It is actively involved in developing new processes and transferring the results of research to full production. As stated in section 1.1 the company is a partner in the BRITE/EuRam programme BE96-3305, 9.10.1996: 'Environmentally friendly and hardness enhanced PVD CrN/TaN superlattice coatings as novel alternative to plated hard chrome' or 'NEWCHROME'. The current proposal will directly aid the transfer of this new technology to industry.

Programme(s)
