Internal wave generation. From theory to applications

Objetivo

Research objectives and content
The proposed research aims at building an accurate model of internal wave emission, based on the Green's function method. It comprises two parts. The first part is the preparation of the monograph 'Internal Wave Radiation', exposing how the waves can be calculated given a representation of their sources as distributions of singularities; this approach was developed by the applicant and partially published in the form of papers. The second part considers how real sources can be represented by singularities, using as a template the simplest excitation mechanism, an oscillating rigid body. Both experiments and theoretical investigations are planned. The theory involves exact solutions for bodies of simple shapes, asymptotic analysis by matched asymptotic expansions, and numerical calculations using boundary integral elements; the experiments rely on a novel 'synthetic Schlieren' technique based on image processing.
Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
The proposed research will allow the applicant to get training on both expe- rimental and theoretical methods involved in internal wave emission, and the -reby to attack some of the latest issues in this field. The host institu- tion will provide expertise on both matters and is the place where many of the methods originate from.
