Load-bearing capacity of continuous lightweight sandwich panels

Objectif

Research objectives and content
The main objective of this research work is to develop methods of modelling the structural behaviour of continuous lightweight sandwich panels using Finite Element Method (FEM). The objective is one of the current interests of manufacturers and designers of structural sandwich panels because the design principles of continuous panels are under construction in Europe. Numerical methods are very seldom utilized in the analysis of sandwich panels in civil engineering. The computations will be used to study the influence of material properties and variations in the geometry of sandwich panel on the performance of a continuous panel. Verification of the Finite Element models will be done by comparison of the computed results with experimental results obtained in the previous research carried out in 1993-1997 in the Laboratory of Structural Mechanics at Helsinki University of Technology. Numerical results are also used to validate the analytical calculation models developed in the previous research project.
The research work will be carried out 1.1.1998 - 31.12.1998 in the Institute of Lightweight Structures and Aerospace Engineering (ILFB) at Vienna University of Technology. The research infrastructure and the research focuses of the ILFB agree extremely well with this research. The ILFB has world-renowned expertise in the development and application of the numerical methods, specially the FEM, for the analysis and design of lightweight structures. The know-how and sophisticated computational techniques, which cannot be found in commercial programs, offer an unique approach to the analysis of sandwich panels used in civil engineering applications.
Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
My research work benefits strongly the from the guidance of the experienced researchers of the host institute and from the possibility to use computer codes of the host institute. The modern computational techniques developed at the host institute for aerospace structures offer a new approach to the analysis of the sandwich panels in civil engineering. This gives new and resh impacts and improves the value of my research. I will benefit a lot from the scientific merit, international experience and personal contacts with researchers working in the same field. The experience and knowledge acquired during the training period in a very famous laboratory help to initiate international co-operation, participate in international research programmes, seek jobs outside Finland and improve language skills.
Links with industry / industrial relevance (22)
The objectives of the project are strongly involved with industrial interests. The project is direct continuation on the previous research financied by a Finnish manufacturer of lightweight sandwich panels. The objectives of the project are ones of the current interests of manufacturers and designers of sandwich panels in Europe.
The results of the research can be applied directly to
the practical design work of the lightweight sandwich panels. The research work results in effective and accurate numerical techniques which can simulate the performance of continuous sandwich panels and partly replace expensive experiments. Further, results affect the new European guidelines and recommendations for the design and use of sandwich panels. The results of the project and the preliminary investigations result in a doctoral thesis and will also be published in appropriate scientific journals.

Champ scientifique (EuroSciVoc)
