Basin scale measurements of microplankton p/r balances in the euphotic zone - relationship wirh midwater respiration

Objective

Research objectives and content
1.- To provide a better understanding of the range, variability and environmental control of net microplankton community production in the euphotic zone of the ocean. This variable (defined as the difference of gross primary production minus total community respiration) corresponds to the potentially exportable production of organic C to ocean depths. In order to fulfil this aim, the large-scale latitudinal (AMT-6 cruise from Cape Town to UK) distribution of community production will be determined in the euphotic zone alongside hydrographic features and microplankton community structure. Estimates of P/R balances are very scarce, especially in oligotrophic regions. Hence, specific attention will be given to this areas where, moreover, recycling of C within the euphotic zone is assumed to play an especial: important role in ecosystem dynamics and C budget. A process oriented cruise to the oligotrophic Atlantic will be done the year 2.
2.- To study the relationship between euphotic zone P/R balance and midwater remineralisation. Alongside euphotic zone net community production measurements, euphotic zone respiration and midwater remineralisation measurements will be made by means of a novel and sensitive method of measuring respiration. This will enable estimates of the balance between production and consumption of organic matter to be extended to greater depths than currently routinely measured. The large range of hydrodynamic/trophic conditions which are intended to be covered may provide insight into the range that balance and the environmental forcing over that relationship.
Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
The cooperation in the validation of the CTC technique for measuring deep respiration is an excellent opportunity for broadening the candidate research scope including oligotrofic regions and midwater remineralisation to his studies of euphotic zone biogenic C balances. The possibility of working with Dr. Robinson is highly valuated because of her broad experience in the use of chemical techniques to determine microbial processes. This will allow the candidate to validate his methodology and to learn new techniques of measuring community production (DeltaDIC) and respiration (DeltaDIC, ETS). As far as the candidate knows, the DeltaDIC technique is not employed in Spain.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
