Measurement of the mass of the w boson and study of ist couplings

Objective

Research objectives and contents The project is to measure the mass of the W boson, the charged mediator of the weak force, and to study its couplings. The project will be carried out within the ALEPH collaboration, one of the four LEP experiments at CERN. This large collaboration consists of 380 physicists from 33 institutions. The LEP accelerator has been upgraded to exceed the W pair production threshold, and provide high luminosity at these energies starting in 1997. The candidate will participate to the data taking. The data statistics which will be accumulated in the 2 or 3 following years should increase more than ten-fold the present one. This will permit to measure the W mass to a precision of 25 MeV/C2 enabling for the first time to check the consistency of the standard model of particle physics at the quantum level. This research is complementary to the direct search for the Higgs boson, responsible for the mass of particles, because it will determine, via the electroweak radiactive corrections, a mass window of 30% for the Higgs boson. Trainig content (objective, benefit and expected impact) The candidate will participate to data taking. He will have to develop sophisticated data analysis methods to reach the accuracy of 2 parts in 100000 needed. This will imply not only to master statistical data analysis and the detailed methods to estimate the systematc effects, but also become an expert in the phenomenonology of electroweak interactions. Links with industry/industrial relevance (22) The Saclay laboratory is embedded in a large research plant, and builds major parts of the future LHC experiments. This environment with engineers and their industrial partners is ideal for an introduction to the world of industry when coming from pure research.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
