Synthesis and characterization of very large polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons for discotic liquid crystals and photoconductors

Objectif



Research objectives and content Professor Mullen's group has developed several synthetic methods to synthesize Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs), functionalized or not by n-alkyl chains. It is proposed in this project to synthesize new and even larger PAHs by different organometallic methods, to determine their complex structure and to study the liquid crystalline and photoconductivity behaviour of the material. These studies consist in measuring their dynamic behavior, their thermal properties and their charge carrier mobility. This characterization requires to use a lot of analysis techniques, mainly polarizing microscopy, scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffratometry and solid-state NMR-spectroscopy. Such new compounds have an extremely attractive profile of properties that will be characterized. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) Such a project could enable me to widen my knowledge in organometallic synthesis and in polymer research (synthesis, characterization and properties analysis) as well as in german. Contacts with several scientists groups inside and outside the Institute are required. So such a project combines a personal as well as a collective multidisciplinary. This represents an interesting scientific challenge for a scientific career. Links with industry / industrial relevance (22) This proposal being related to industries (BASF and Philips), it is very complete as it concerns the synthesis, the characterization and the expected use of the material as photoconductors .
