Molecular, genetic and kinematic investigations into the role of the cell cycle in regulating root growth of arabidopsis thaliana seedings

Objective

The aim of this project is to investigate the role of cell cycle control mechanisms in the regulation of plant growth and development. For this we use a kinematic approach to quantify rates of cell division and cell expansion in primary roots of Arabidopsis thaliana seedlings. I will continue ongoing investigations into the effects of environmental and physiological treatments on cell division and cell expansion these roots. The role of specific cell cycle proteins in mediating these responses will then be investigated by comparing local abundance of these enzymes with cell division activity. Complementary to this work, I plan to investigate the role of individual cell cycle genes in plant growth regulation by analyzing the effects of mutations on cell division and cell expansion and whole organ growth rates.
Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
The proposed research will yield fundamental knowledge about the growth processes cell division and expansion, and the role they play in the regulation of plant growth and development. The use of molecular and genetic techniques will be an important training for my future career as a researcher in the field of plant growth and development. The major impact of this project will be that it integrates knowledge of cell cycle regulation at the genetic/molecular level through cellular processes into the whole plant level.
Links with industry / industrial relevance (22)
Understanding of fundamental plant growth processes ultimately benefits quality and productivity of agricultural crops.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
