Superfluidity and magnetism of bulk liquid 3he and quasi-two-dimensional 3he films at ultra low temperatures

Objective

Research objectives and content
Liquid helium three displays p-wave pairing and Bose-Einstein condensation into a non-trivial superfluid state. The ballistic regime, observed substantially below the superfluid critical temperature Tc, has been explored in Lancaster and in Grenoble using very different techniques. Presently, only three laboratories in the world have developed facilities allowing studies of liquid 3He at temperatures on the order of 100 microKelvin: Lancaster, Bayreuth and Grenoble.
The first objective of the proposed research work is to investigate the magnetically ordered excited coherent quantum state superfluid 3He (homogeneously precessing domains, catastrophic relaxation, non-linear excitations, 'spin wave laser' emission) discovered recently. The non-linear magnetic response of the coherent quantum states will be detected both by pulsed and cw NMR techniques. The measurements include the determination of the lifetime and decay mecanism of the quantum excited states.
The second objective is to investigate liquid 3He films of atomic thickness adsorbed on solid substrates, where an experimentally tunable competition of correlation and disorder effects in two dimensions is observed. Continuous-wave NMR measurements of the nuclear magnetisation should provide reliable a determination of the spin correction to the density of states due to Anderson localisation in 2D systems of itinerant interacting fermions. Alt'schuler's theory, developed for electronic systems. should be applicable here in better defined conditions. Training content (objective. benefit and expected impact) Training in the fields of: - ultra-low temperatures physics: superfluid 3He and applications to cosmology. - condensed matter physics: model systems for correlated fermions. - very low power. high sensitivity cryogenic NMR techniques - refrigeration and thermometry techniques below I Kelvin The expected benefits from a stay at the world's largest low temperature laboratory are: - high level personal training and broadening of scientific interests. -This work should allow the Lancaster and Grenoble low temperature laboratories to develop a deeper collaboration in new fields where Europe has a leading position: condensed matter and cosmological applications of 3He physics.
Links with industry / industrial relevance (22) The research group at the CRTBT laboratory of the CNRS is presently having a collaboration with l'Air Liquide (France) in the subject area of the project: thermometry at temperatures below I Kelvin and 3He/4He dilution refrigerator design: common research and development ('contrats de licence d'exploitatation').

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
