Objective
Research objectives and content
The objective of the proposed research is to study the physics of laser-cooled atoms at micro-Kelvin temperatures interacting with magnetic surfaces. As a 1st goal a Zeeman quantum well above a suitably magnetised surface will be used to confine cold atoms to a horizontal plane. The 2nd goal is to study the occupation of the vibrational states in this quantum well including the realisation of an atom waveguide. The 3nd goal is to reach occupation of the vibrational ground state only and thereby form a 2D atom gas. The physics of condensed matter in low dimensional structures has proven to be particularly rich. The proposed experiment will extend this field to the weakly interacting 2D Bose gas, which has previously not been studied.
Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
The proposed doctoral training will complement my background in surface magnetism with expertise in atomic physics and quantum optics. Only the U. o. Sussex in the world has demonstrated manipulation of cold atoms by magnetic surfaces.
Links with industry / industrial relevance (22)
The magnetic elements to be developed will form the basis for a promising new technology for manipulating atoms. The required magnetic surfaces are designed in an ongoing industrial collaboration.
