Objective
Research objectives and content
The project proposes a very systematic examination of a series of related rhenium carbonyl complexes which will be liquid crystals with a prediction of low transition temperatures. The programme contains a number of synthetic strategies for lowering transition temperatures which will be developed initially in parallel, and then in combination to maximum effect. Comparison with other, related rhenium complexes shows that these tetracarbonyl complexes give lower-melting complexes, and it is proposed that this is a dipolar effect. Therefore, suitable examples will be synthesised in large quantities and subjected to detailed dielectric study. The comparison of synthetic strategies and dielectric studies will provide a formidable amount of systematic information which will inform the predictive capability in the area of metallomesogens.
Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
The project offers the opportunity for the applicant to become familiar with new synthetic chemistry, and to become skilled in many aspects of liquid crystal science. Thus, expertise will be gained in polarised optical microscopy, calorimetric studies and mixture work, in addition to dielectric measurement in anisotropic systems. The two-year programme will give the applicant skills in the developing area of Materials Chemistry, providing a solid base from which to seek permanent employment in Europe in academia or industry.
