Transport properties of hybrid mesoscopic interacting electron systems

Objective

Research objectives and content
The aim of this proposal is to investigate transport in mesoscopic superconducting hybrid structures in the
presence of electron-electron interactions. We shall study the effect on the electron states of the electron-electron
interaction and the boundary conditions originating from interfaces between normal and superconducting regions.
I shall start by analysing one of the simplest situations, that being a semi-infinite normal system in contact with a
superconductor, and then progress to more complex and experimentally relevant geometries such as mesoscopic loops
with superconducting inclusions and normal metal (N) - insulator (I) - superconductor (S) structures. We shall examine
how interactions effect the superconducting proximity effect and what effect this has on transport in N - I - S and
Andreev interferometer structures.
Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
I shall combine my knowledge of transport in hybrid superconducting structures with the expertise at the host institution
in interacting electron systems. This will involve the understanding of different models of interacting electron systems
and the techniques that are used to solve them (including renormalisation group, equation-of-motion and strong-coupling
approaches to interacting systems).
Links with industry / industrial relevance (22)
This area of research is receiving increasing amounts of attention by the electronics industry with an eye on the
production of new electronic devices for the 21 st century.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
