Objective
Research objectives and content
The main objective of this project is to perform a detailed study of the quantum size effects which appear when the physical size of a metallic cluster (containing from a few atoms up to a few thousands) becomes comparable to the wavelength of an electron at the Fermi level. At very low temperatures (<1 K), the magnetic response and the specific heat of clusters becomes markedly different to the 'bulk' metallic behaviour. We intend to study this new type of magnetism in different samples in the presence of an applied field by means of several experimental techniques. The multivalent metal cluster molecules have lower nuclearity, which allows us to calculate complete spin-density mappings. Therefore, we will be able to distinguish whether the magnetic moments are or not delocalised over the molecule. Finally, we will measure the magnetic relaxation of some metallic clusters which are very good candidates to show magnetic quantum tunnelling.I Training
content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
The applicant will get into contact with the new, rapidly expanding field of cluster science. Besides getting a deep education in experimental physics at very low temperature, he will benefit from the interdisciplinary character of this project: chemistry and physics, experiment and theory. Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
