Development of a fabrication and quality assurance facility for the drift- tubes of the muon chambers of the atlas experiment

Objective

Research objectives and content
High-momentum final-state muons are amongst the most promising and robust signatures of physics at LHC. To exploit this potential, the ATLAS Collaboration has designed a high-resolution muon spectrometer. The basic detection elements of the muon chambers are aluminium tubes of a typical single wire resolution of 80 llm. The aim of the proposed project is to setup the facilities for the fabrication of the drift tubes and the assurance of their quality. The required single wire resolution commensurate a high precision mechanical construction process of the drift tubes. During or directly after the tube fabrication extensive quality assurance is required, which will verify the wire location and tension, leak rate and proper operation of each tube.
Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
The proposed project will give the opportunity to the scientific staff, the technicians and the under- post- graduate students to be trained on advanced technological techniques.
