Phenomenology of electroweak and strong interactions at high energy colliders

Objectif

Research objective and content
The project 'PHENOMENOLOGY OF ELECTROWEAK AND STRONG INTERACTIONS AT HIGH-ENERGY COLLIDERS' proposed by the applicant in collaboration with the Department of Physics at the Aris- totle University of Thessaloniki, is aimed at contributing to the intensive phenomenological studies needed to investigate particle physics at the very high energy scales attainable during the next ten years with the running and planned colliders, such as LEP 11, HERA, LHC and the Linear Collider. The main objective of this project is to investigate important aspects of the theory, the so- called Standard Model, that have not yet been tested experimentally, such as the dynamics of the Higgs sector and its effects to the electroweak gauge boson self-interactions The self-couplings of the massive gauge bosons, W and Z, as well as their electromagnetic interactions will be studied in all experimentally accessible channels, using very accurate Standard Model predictions, including higher- order corrections, non-resonant contributions and finite width effects. Another important objective is the study of the heavy quarks, especially of the top quark. The Large Hadron Collider will provide us with an excellent environment to study the production of the top quark as well as its non-standard couplings to the gauge bosons. Top-production including QCD corrections as well as a detailed Monte Carlo description of the final state partons will be used as the the basis of top quark mass and couplings determination. Finally a very important aspect of the project is the set up of new computational methods and techniques for multiparticle processes, both at tree and at the one-loop level, the development of multichannel Monte Carlo algorithms for phase space integration and the implementation of symbolic manipulation programs. The high-energy phenomenology group at the Host Institution, directed by Professor George Gounaris is one of the most active in Greece and highly regarded internationally. It is expected that the project will stimulate the high-energy physics activities of the Host Institution, both in the phenomenological as well as in the experimental areas. The applicant, being for many times in the past at the Host Institution and collaborating regularly with the high-energy phenomenology group, will be in a favoured position to complete successfully the objectives of the proposed project and to get an excellent training in the field of modern high-energy phenomenology.

Programme(s)
