Objective
Research objectives and content
New High Energy Physics pep collider experiments like ATLAS at CERN are presently acquiring a new level of precision technology to measure high-momentum muon particles. Muons can be uniquely assigned to the decay of some heavy particles (W, Z, Higgs) and may therefore well prove to be the chief indicator for discoveries which allow a deeper understanding of physics at small distances and of the origins of mass. The challenge of high precision measurements can be mastered by combining the achievements of two critical technological fields: high-pressure drift tube technology for local high-precision measurement of particle coordinates and state-of-the-art laser technology for control of the overall precision of the mechanics. While an advanved R&D program has proven the feasibility of the fundamental technical choices, a number of critical issues for performance and realisation still needs additional thorough analysis. This program of work offers a possibility to participate in a fast evolving new field of experimental exploration. It also opens the door to a closer involvement in the fundamental physics questions which are the aim of this experimental program.
Tight cooperation with industry with respect to high-precision structural elements, which has already stimulated manufacturers to produce products above their current standards. The same is true for low-noise, high-speed readout electronics and for the development of laser based monitoring equipment.
Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
1) Operation and calibration of high-pressure drift tube detectors including high-speed readout electronics.
2) Determining the limiting resolution of a laser calibration system using newly developed strip detectors on thc hasis of amorphous Si. 3) Computer simulation of physics events and event reconstruction, optimization of reconstruction algorithms.

Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.
