Objectif
Research objectives and content The main target of this project is the image of the structure and reflectivity characteristics of the crust and lithospheric mantle beneath the Southeastern region of the North Sea based on seismic profiles. Careful processing of the data and interpretation can lead to a very good image of the zones of the crust unavailable by geological direct methods. This study will concentrate on aspects such as possible reactivation of collisional faults, the role of the Caledonian suture and identification of Paleozoic sediments below the graben- a possible evidence for a paleozoic rift phase!!-. The acquisition of data is completed.. They have a great potential as the quality of the data is good and is expected with some reprocessing to have better images. In addition, the experiment design will permit a full integration of coincident reflection and refraction data so the crustal characteristics can be compared in both methods to provide a better view and understanding of the lithospheric processes.
Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) With this project, the applicant will benefit from the use of the most modern software and technology to proccess and interpret seismic data. Become more familiar with the handling and modeling of seismic data is one of my personal interests in this proposal. Also, the final interpretation, provided the quality of the images has been enhanced, will give new ideas for a better understanding of the processes involved in the formation of the North Sea Graben in particular, but for any other similar geological setting in the world. The 'applied' dimension of the study comes from the application of the seismic tecnology to obtain high quality images of the subsoil and geometry of the crust, highly encouraged by mining and oil industry. The use of several disciplines in science to accomplish the project makes its training potential increase as a good oportunity to form a researcher in an specific field without forgetting the related science areas.
Links with industry / industrial relevance (22) The adquisition of the data has been sponsored for two companies: Maersk Oil and Gas form Copenhagen and BEB Erdgas and Oel from Hannover, as crustal evolution studies from seismic methods has been proved to be a valuable tool to infer potential reservoirs of natural resources.
