Objective
Research objectives and content
The current investigation proposes a chemical modification of the cellulose microfibrils to prepare new compounds well designed as thickeners for organic solvents and as filler for non polar polymeric matrices. The three major aspects, which will be developed, will be:
- study of the chemical derivation of microfibrils. The feasibility of different types of reaction will be tested. After modification, analytical characterization will be done by means of X-ray diffraction, electronic microscopy, FTIR and solid 13C-NMR to learn the extension of modification and whether such modification has destroyed the crystallinity and morphology of microfibril.
- behavior of modified microfibrils in organic solvents. The dispersion in various solvents with different polarities and their orientation in them will be determined through their turbidity and the use of polarized light, respectively. The rheological properties will be studied as a function of different factors such as shearing speed, modified micofibril content and temperature.
- modified microfibrils as fillers in polymers. The methodology will be as follows: preparation of reinforced films, characterization of the dispersion and mechanical properties. An improvement of the mechanical properties is expected, especially above the glass transition temperature of the polymer.
Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
The development of the current research provides me the opportunity to join in one project the synthesis of some new and important practical materials, the further characterization and the study of their chemical and rheological properties. In addition to this attractive features, it provides me the feasibility to work in a private company and to realize how research is done when productivity and competition are important factors. All my previous knowledge about chemistry and physico-chemical properties of polymers, acquired during the Ph.D. period and the american post-doctoral, could be completed and improved with the application of some techniques very useful which I am not very familiar, such as, electronic microscopy and solid 13C-NMR. This formation as post-doc will be very helpful when I return to the research center in Madrid.
Links with industry / industrial relevance (22)
In fact, the performance of this project will be made in an industry. This type of material is quite attractive from the practical point of view. Such structures have recently received the attention of industrial companies especially as thickening agents or as fillers in latex. These new modified microfibrils would provide this type of material new physico-chemical properties. More polymer matrices could be reinforced with this type of fillers, their mechanical properties could be improved and their practical uses could be increased. It is a new area that needs to be explore to obtain the knowledge of their potential properties and their expansion in commercial applications.
