Stochastic determination of capture zones of groundwater wells

Objectif

Research objectives and content
Capture zones of groundwater wells are an important tool in the protection of water supply sources.
The proposed project aims to improve the ability of groundwater flow models to predict the location of small and large scale capture zones of wells in heterogeneous formations.
Objectives include a better understanding of the complex groundwater flow processes that govern the behaviour of capture zones, a better understanding of the influence of different geologic and hydrogeologic settings on capture zones, and improving methods to delineate capture zones.
Developed methodologies will be applied and illustrated in one or more case studies.
Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
The proposed project will be a PhD project and the applicant will be trained as a PhD student. Training will include lectured courses, literature study, guided self-study and 'on the job' training, in cooperation with international and British researchers and industry. Links with industry / industrial relevance (22)
The project will be carried out in co-operation with the Netherlands Institute of Applied Geoscience (NITG-TNO), with which the hydrology research group at Imperial College (IC) has ongoing collaboration in the field of stochastic subsurface hydrology. Both the research and the industry will benefit from IC's links with British, and NITG-TNO's links with Dutch water companies and environmental consultancies and agencies.
