Thin films of monomeric and polymeric liquid crystals - electro-optics, non-linear optics, and aligning properties

Objective

Research objectives and content The research project aims at a general study of thin ordered films of monomeric and polymeric liquid crystals. Thin films of lyotropic and thermotropic liquid crystals will be deposited and used as aligning layers in liquid crystal (LC) cells. The electro-optical and the alignlng properties will be studied. A systematic study on the deposition of thin films of photo-reactive LC:s and ferroelectric LC:s will be done. The films will be characterised by non-linear optics, quartz crystal microbalance and atomic force microscopy. The possibility of using thin ordered films of ferroelectric liquid crystals in wavequide devices will also be investigated. Training contenl (objective, benefit and cxpected impact) The applicant expects to enlarge her knowledge of liquid crystals, from both the experimental and the theoretical point of view. She expects to receive a considerable training in the fabrication and the investigation of LC thin films and LC cells. They are completely new to the applicant, and thus are expected to have a very benefical impact on the scientific training of the applicant. Links with industry / Industrial relevance (22) The host institution has ongoing industrial collaboration with | FLC Optics Ltd, Celsius Tech Ltd, and ESA in the subject area of the project of the applicant.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
