Optically active cyclopentadienyl organometallic compounds with lewis-base substituents

Objetivo

Research objectives and content
Organometallic complexes containing chiral ligands are becoming increasingly important in synthetic methodology as catalytic or stoichiometric mediators of enantioselective reactions. The application of cyclopentadienyl (Cp) ligands as a support for introducing chirality is particularly attractive due to the wide variety of potentially synthetically useful organometallic complexes containing this ligand. On the other hand, organometallic complexes wearing Cp ligands with Lewis-Base side chains is another area of growing interest in synthetic chemistry as these ligands could create a fixed pocket around the complexed metal by additional intramolecular coordination of the heteroatom (N, O,...). The objective of the work to be carried out is to combine both ideas to obtain optically active rigidly metal-coordinated chiral Cp complexes. Some synthetic strategies to obtain the target compounds introducing chirality in the ring (planar chirality), in the side chain, or in the heteroatom are outlined in detail in the research proposal. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
The chemistry in this proposal involves the use and handling of sensitive reagents and therefore provides excellent training in careful experimentation. Furthermore, the work will require the use of the all of the most up-to-date analytical techniques (NMR, IR, HPLC...) and so will provide comprehensive training. On the other hand, the host institute is the best centre to carry out this project because it is probably the most active institute in Europe in the field of both organic and inorganic asymmetric synthesis.
Links with industry / industrial relevance (22)
The target compounds described in this proposal are of general interest in chemical industry for catalytic or stoichiometric mediators of many enantioselective reactions. The host laboratory have strong links with industry (Bayer AG, Celanese, Ciba Speciality Chemicals).
