An Analysis of early Childhood Services in Greece for the optimisation of Children's Social and Cognitive Development

Research objectives and content

The research project attempts to analyse the different types of Early Childhood Services operating in Greece and their impact on children's social and cognitive development. Research evidence in the area of early childhood services and children's development has shown that pre-school programmes have a positive effect on children's development under specific circumstances concerning curriculum. Staff training and staff-children ratio, educational resources, and accessibility by the participants and stakeholders (parents, community). Concerning the social role of these services in Greece (educational, psychological, provision of care) and the economic role as community's and government's investment for the promotion of citizens' well-being, the current project has the objective not only to investigate how the operation of these services comply with the established principles, but also to forward a proposal in aspiration to maximise the gains of these services for children's social and cognitive development, community's quality of life, and economic policy management.

Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)

The aforementioned research project will be supported by a training plan provided by the host institution. The training includes the attendance of courses specialized to the researcher's area, the familiarisation with the methods and techniques required for the conduct of the project, the availability of resources needed for the project, the supervision by a responsible scientist, the scientific support from the whole department. The objective of this training is to provide the scientific basis required for the conduct of a PhD project and widen the horizons of thought and research of scientific topics.
