Objective
Research objectives and content
In the last years the possibility of achieving nonlinear phase shifts by cascading second order effects has opened a new line of research with applications for all opbcal processing and design of powerful tunable coherent source of enhance quality. Clearly, the potential applications of cascading based devices depend on their operational performance compared to the existing devices. To answer to this issue, investigation of the underlying physical processes, both theoretical and expenmenta is required. In this research project we propose to use cascading effects with a two-fold application: i) First, to develop an ultrafast all-optical processing device which acts as a fast reconfigurable time domain conrnutation element. We will study the possibility of information routing in a second order nonlinear crystal (KTP, PPLN) by exploiting self-induced waveguiding and Yjunctions as a result of soliton-soliton interaction. ii) We will consider analytically, nurnerically and experimentally the possibilities offered by self-trapping effects with quadratic spatial solitons for the selection of regular (single mode) transverse pattern during optical parametric amplifi, ation and oscillation. It is expected that the propagation of quadratic solitons in optical pararnetric generators and oscillators increases the brightness of the radiation generated by them. Both applications lie on the sarne physical phenomena: spatial solitons induced by second order non linear effects and the interplay between diffraction and nonlinearity.
Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
The training will complete the formation of the applicant in Optics in a host institution which has demonstrated its large experience in this field. Moreover, the work training proposed deals with applications related to growing lines of research in Optics: optical processing and design of powerful laser sources.
Links with industry / industrial relevance (22)
The industrial relevance of the proposed all-optical device clearly lies in the possibility of demultiplexing an ultra-high bit data stream into several channels at lower data rates. Applications are envisaged in the telecommunication business. Bcsides a significant improvement of the brightness of the radiations emined by optical parametric generators and oscillators is a priority objective of companies that manufacture these optical sources.
