Magnetic mesoestructures and magnetoelectronic devices

Objective

Research objectives and content
We propose here to develop a research programme on mesostructures fabricated from ferromagnetic transition metal multilayers. These mesostructures can be fabricated by electron beam lithography and etching on a continuous film deposited by M.B.E or in a second approach, deposited on an artificially or naturally patterned substrate which is then introduced into the MBE growth chamber. The proposed research programme will form part of a larger project in which structured magnetic films are investigated using a wide range of advanced magnetic measurement techniques.
Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
The project leads to the PhD degree and provides training in MBE growth, advanced magnetic measurements, and device . phyics. Objectives: . (1) T gain expertise in MBE growth and lithographic technique. . (2) Gain expertise in magnetic measurement and computational techniques. (3) Gain a good understanding of thin film magnetism concepts and state of the art. (4) Develop an awareness of applications for thin film devices and materials.
Links with industry / industrial relevance (22)
The focus of the project is directly relevant to miniature magnetic sensor and magnetic device technologies. It is relevant to magnetic information storage and magnetoelectronics. The host research group has on-going research projects with the Toshiba Corporation, Philips and MR Sensors (an SME based in the UK.)

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
