Top-quark physics with the atlas-muon spectrometer at lhc andcontribution to the construction and test of the first muon chamber - mdt - at the university of thessaloniki

Objetivo

Research objectives and content
The proposed project on one hand will exhaust physics topics for the start up of LHC, like Top-quark physics with the ATLAS-Muon Spectrometer and on the other will be a contribution to the construction and test of a prototype MDT chamber -Module zero- at the Nuclear Physics Laboratory of the University of Thessaloniki. It aims to do all the preparatory study on aspects of Top-quark physics so that with the start of run of LHC to be able to have results concerning the properties of the Top-quark and investigate aspects which need large statistics, like rare decays, CP violation etc. At the same time will be a contribution to the assembly and test of a prototype high precision muon tracking chamber (MDT), which will take place at the University of Thessaloniki in Greece. A temperature and humidity controlled laboratory will be set up at the University of Thessaloniki, and the complete procedure for assembling chambers of typical size lx2 m2, with mechanical precision in construction of the order of 10 microns will be established. The assembly method should be adequate for a serial production of over 100 chambers in the next few years. Finally, a test facility will be set up in order to verify the mechanical accuracy of the chambers, while their performance will be tested with cosmic ray muons. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
The proposed project will give the opportunity to the applicant, Dr. I.Vichou to apply her knowledge and experience on | hardware and data acquisition and in particular on physics analysis with ATLAS specific software, in her country of origin. I The project at the University of Thessaloniki, in particular, will be a continuation of her project abroad. She will continue her | research on the same experiment (ATLAS) and on similar aspects of hardware and software. This is an efficient way to | develop, in a relative short time, her research initiatives in the country of origin, contribute to an ongoing project in Greece (assembly and test of the prototype MDT chamber) and guide graduate students on physics analysis related to the start up of I LHC. She will bring into the group her experience on hardware and ATLAS related software and at the same time she will | mature collaborating with both the experimental and theory groups of the Division.
Links with industry / industrial relevance (22)
The assembly of the MDT prototype chamber will be carried out in collaboration with two industries of Northern Greece: | METKA for Metallic Constructions and ORPHANIDIS for precision tooling, both interested in developing novel techniques on precision mechanics. They intend to participate in the mass production of the chambers as well. The physics analysis part of the proposed project will apply novel techniques like Object Oriented (OO) software neural | networks etc. Most of the ATLAS software and the physics simulation programs are using OO languages like C++ and are currently under development. Neural networks can be used for identifying b-quarks, or for muon pattern recognition in I general. Both these aspects of software can be developed in collaboration with Greek software companies like INTRASOFT, | AMPER and others. Both OO software and neural networks are of interest to them because they provide specific problems | with possible applications.
