Research objectives and content
The relation between the Micro- and the Macrolevel is one of the main issues in economic research. On the one side it concerns the important problem of aggregation and the need of possible Microfoundations for macroeconomic models (cf. Kirman (1992)). On the other side it focuses also directly on the macroscopic effects of any kind of interaction between individual agents on the microlevel. This second approach goes back to the work of Thomas Schelling (1978). See also the recent work of Peyton Young (1997). Its main idea is to see any kind of general structures of a group, a population, or an economy (the macrolevel) as the result of some interaction between individual members of the group or agents within the population (the microlevel). The general aim of this project is to continue theoretical research within that direction. In particular, the main object is to give and to analyse formal models that focus on the idea just described. With this respect, promising theoretical tools are, for example, given by the theory of Interacting Particle Systems and the theory of Random Fields. Both theories consider a general class of stochastic processes with multi-dimensional index sets that allow for a rigorous analysis of the interaction between spatially arranged particles (agents). Similarly, also models of Evolutionary Game Theory have looked at the dynamics of large populations of agents or players that repeatedly interact with each other in playing anon-cooperative game. In combination with new models of bounded rational behaviour of agents (cf. e.g. Rubinstein (1997), these models represent another inspiring starting point for addressing the question of this project.
Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
In the CentER Graduate Programme of Economics courses will be followed. Furthermore the network for General and Quantitative Economics will contribute to the educational part of the programme.

The Microeconomics research group at CentER has many ties with industry, as described in the Host Institute Description. The object of research is certainly of interest for both industry and policy addressing the question of this project. //WP_WP_CD 0301
