Tri-dimensional electromagnetic modelling of melting sourves in the mantle - examples of a fast spreading center and a hot-spot

Objective

Research objectives and content
Interest in marine electromagnetic experiments measuring the electrical conductivity in the earth islarge in tile scientific community and in industry. Industry is interested in using marine EM as a l complimentary method to seismics in the search of oil and gas. Scientific interest focuses on using EM to investigate the mantle upwelling and mantle melting underneath mid-occan ridges and hot-spots. Mantle upwelling is not understood due to the lack of data on the thermal state and the degree of melting of the mantle, parameters to which the electrical conductivity is particularly sensitive to.During my Ph.D. I derived the first indications of a 2D melt distribution underneath a mid-ocean ridge. Sufficient data to allow 3D imaging are now within reach. A large data set was collected on the East Pacific mid-ocean ridge in a international effort in which the host institution participated. Furthermore the host institution collected data above a hot-spot close to the Society Islands. We plan to derive and compare first AD conductivity images of the mantle upwelling zone underneath a hot spot and a mid ocean ridge based on the data sets provided by the institution which also supplies and develops 3D modelling and inversion software.
Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
Universite de Bretagne is currently the only institution capable of performing deep penetrating EM experiments. The TMR progranm would allow me to work on a unique set of data and learn about 3D modelling of marine EM data. Deriving 3D images with the help of data and software supplied by the host institution would yield first observational 3D information on the mantle upwelling which is of fundamental interest for earth sciences. Performing the research at the University de Bretagne, which host scientists working on all areas and aspects of marine research also gives me the opportunity to broaden my) understanding of marine processes. Links with industry / industrial relevance (22)
Industrial interest in EM to explore continental shelves is increasing. Knowledge and experience in acquiring and modelling marine EM data will give us the opportunity to offer our knowledge to the oil and gas industry which up to now, relied mainly on north-american expertise.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
