Study of mechanisms involved in ozone loss over Europe based on satellite observations and numerical models

Objective

Research objectives and content: The project will involve the completion of the firs ever self-consistent data set. This will allow a more accurate investigation on the whole issue of ozone depletion, and provide mechanistic insights into the chemistry and dynamics of the atmosphere at an unprecedented level of detail. In particular we will use the technique of data assimilation to study in detail the ozone loss mechanisms in operation over Europe based on a self-consistent analyses of stratospheric constituents obtained from measurements made by the UARS and GOME satellites. Something which has never been done before. The work will be done will improve the technique of data assimilation and apply it in new ways to remotely-sensed observations of the atmosphere. It will use data assimilation to make efficient and effective use of remotely-sensed data in support of European and international and international programmes of Earth Observation.
Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
The project will provide an inter-disciplinary training in the various branches of atmospheric science, embracing physics, chemistry, mathematical methods, meteorology, and computer science. It will extend my understanding of computer simulation, data analysis, and visualisation. It will also improve my language skill.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
