Objective
Research objectives and content
The dynamics of systems containing cables have been an interesting research topic since many years. They are used in different types of transportation systems. The idea of the proposed research project is to combine the interesting dynamics of a cable with multi-body systems connected to his ends like vehicles and cable-winches. Furthermore effects induced by winding and unwinding the cable (changing length) will be investigated. Examples for such systems are cable railways, elevators and zerogravity devices in amusement parks. Especially the last type of vehicles is characterized by both great amplitude of the cable tension force and the length. The cable will be modelled as a continuous system including longitudinal and transversal effects. After formulating the equations of motion, an approximative method like Ritz' or Galerkin's will be used to get them into a solvable form. Together with the equations of motion of the connected multi-body systems they will be programmed to perform a numerical simulation of the systems behaviour. Therefore will be chosen a special system with technical relevance. The simulation yields time series, general behaviour and other important details. With these results, questions about overload caused by nonlinear effects or chaotic behaviour and vibrations of the vehicle can be answered.
Training content (objective. benefit and expected impact)
The last years I collected experiences in modelling and simulating multi-body systems with and without unilateral constraints. Mainly the problems dealt with rigid body systems. One aim of the training is the enlargement of know-how concerning multibody systems with special regard to nonlinear elastic aspects which I haven't treated yet. Furthermore I want to gain valuable experience in general nonlinear dynamics. Due to this, my choice fell on Prof. G. Rega at Rome who is one of the most internationally known experts on these fields. With regard to my further curriculum I would it immensely from the experience gamed in the training. This will turn into account both in later ial employment and for an university career.
Links with industry / industrial relevance (22)
The dynamic behaviour of vehicle-systems containing cables is important for the design process of such systems. Up to now such effects are not taken into account and the choice of cables is done by a static load multiplied with a safety-factor. Better insight to the dynamical behaviour can improve such calculations. Another aspect are vibrations which are uncomfortable for the passengers. If their principle is understood, they can be avoided by an appropriate design.
