Objectif
Research objectives and content
The proposed project focuses on river margins or the riparian zones of the rivers Trent, Severn and Wye in the United Kingdom. Within these major river systems, riparian zones are subject to overbank flooding and, therefore, play an important role in moderating the transfer of particulate matter within the river system. This moderating role of river margins is poorly understood, and yet it has considerable significance for catchment management, since it provides an interface between particulate material supplied to the river system from the catchment, and its delivery to downstream areas as well as providing a resource or pollution source for the local riparian ecosystem.
Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
The aim of the project is to improve the understanding (i) of how the form and structure of the riparian zone influence the nature of local depositional and resuspension processes, and (ii) how human activity such as land management at the catchment scale interacts with the local (reach) scale role of the river margins in influencing the overall sediment budget Thus, the project will contribute to the development of sustainable approaches for integrated land and water management within large catchments and will provide a basis for innovative and sustainable environmental designs for river margin systems.
