Preparation and characterization of new pillared clay materials. Atalytic and environmental applications

Objectif

Research objectives and content
Synthesis, characterization and evaluation of the potential applications of new pillared clay solids. Study of their active surface groups and reactivity. Investigation of their catalytic and sorbent activity. 1) Synthesis of pillared clay compounds by intercalation of montmorillonite, saponite, hectorite and stevensite with Al(III), Ti(IV), Zr(IV), Cr(III) and Fe(III) polycations. Obtention of microporous solids thermally stable up to 6000C, with basal spacings of about 20A, surface areas up to 400 m2/g and micropore volumes up to 0.1 mL/g. 2) Characterization of the pillared clays by Infrared Spectroscopy, X-Ray Diffraction, Adsorption Measurements, Thermal Analyses, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance and Mossbauer Spectroscopy. Determination of the adsorptive properties in the retention of Cd2+ Cu2+ and PbX+ 3) Preparation of new supported catalysts, containing large amounts of Pt in high surface area microporous solids, by adsorption of Pt(II)-Pt(IV) on the pillared clays. Evaluation of the catalytic activity of these solids.
Training content (objective. benefit and expected impact)
Learning the new techniques employed in European laboratories in the physico-chemical treatments of clay minerals and in the characterization of the obtained solids, in order to apply them in the Clay Mineral Research Group at Salamanca University.
Links with industry / industrial relevance (22)
Research of Clay Mineral Group at Salamanca University is sponsored by TOLSA, S.A. the biggest clay company in Spain.
